Thanks a lot for helping me in a greater way to finish my dissertation! Would be more thankful if you continue to provide online access!

I had a good experience at the consulate applying for my visa.nIt would really help if you arrived five minutes before your appointment time. Arriving very early would only cause you to wait in a long line outside the building. Do not carry any items as mentioned in the appointment letter, not even your wallet and phone; it's smoother and faster (unless you're alone and have no choice).nnJust follow the instructions on the appointment letter and the signs in the building. The people who interviewed me were courteous and nice. I heard a lot about people feeling intimidated, that wasn't my experience. It helps to sound pretty convincing about not being a potential immigrant, articulate and nice.

Great place for quiet reading/research/learning. Great place to take a break from your smart devices. Feel free to bring your own books, as it's not a full-fledged library. For instance, they don't carry a copy of the most-translated book of all time.nnSecurity is strict, as this place is located inside an American property. Electronic items (phones/tablets/laptops, cables, headphones, chargers, USB drives, remote keys/key fobs, smartwatches) are NOT allowed. If you have any of these electronic items, they will be held at the security desk till you return from the library.nnThe holding space at the security check-in is tiny. It is only big enough to hold a couple of smartphones. One personal bag is allowed, sans any electronic items and/or other things that are considered dangerous. So, plan accordingly if you are not a Chennai resident.nnThere is a small area in the back for quiet play for children. Drinking water and clean bathrooms are available.nnNo parking is available, not even for two-wheelers, as this place is in a high-security area. The best way to get here is to get a ride or walk. The entrance is on the side of the consulate that is closest to the church, not the side where visa applicants stand in line.

The renovated and hype American Center (formerly American Library) located within the U.S. Consulate, Chennai is a new age Learning Space which caters to all age groups. The books and resources are obviously America centered.nnIts also a place for people who are looking for authentic information on and about the USA, its culture and various other aspects. They also have a collection of Tamil books on and about USA apart from Tamil Translations of many American works.nnIt has a great collection of popular young adult and children's books apart from literary classics. The library also boasts of a good video collection which comprises of classics, blockbusters, new movies, children's movies, documentaries which can be viewed at the Center. These days they offer a wide variety of interactive programs.nnMembers can borrow books and journals and have free access to internet at the library. Anyone can walk in and use the space for reading and viewing the videos. All that a person needs is a valid, original Govt issued ID.nnOne of the biggest drawbacks is the lack of parking space. Its advisable to use public transport while visiting this place. Also they do not allow any electronic items inside the premises. All electronic items needs to be switched off and handed over at the security deposit along with the original ID while entering. (Please check the website for the security instructions). The Library works only during weekdays. It does not provide any food or snack. So plan accordingly if you are visiting the place. Anytime between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm is ideal for visiting.nnDespite these little hassles, its still a great place to visit and spend time with kids and friends, if you have the time.nnSome tips for visitors:nnPlease be patient at the security gate as it takes time for the process.nStick to the security instructions as this is the Consulate premises and they are quite strict with the regulations.nnPhotocopies of any ID will not be accepted,nnKids below 15 years need to be accompanied by an adult and don't need IDs. School IDs are accepted.nnYou can bring one or two of your personal text books to read. Many students prepare for their exams as it is quiet without any mobiles. They take a break by checking their emails and watching a movie.nnYou will be asked to leave exactly at 5 p.m. - the closing time. So its better to make a move a few minutes in advance.nnThe staff are generally very helpful. You can approach them to know about the services and membership privileges. They are very obliging.nnAvoid making noise in the Library and handle the various resources with care. especially when you have young kids with you.
