As a USAF veteran, serving active duty 1972 to 1976, I've sought out services a few times over the decades here at the Ft. Meade Veterans Administration Medical Center. Each time was a memorable experience, having always been treated with respect and dignity. Now Ft. Meade VAMC is literally my home, having become a resident of their hospice program. The level of care being received here is nothing short of exceptional, the nursing staff being among the best ever personally experienced, and the end of life care is well-rounded, compassionate, and complete. We veterans are quite fortunate to have certain VAMCs offering hospice services at various locations nationwide.nnThe food being served to us here is really good with an excellent variety offered, the Dietary Department working with each veteran to insure we are receiving what we like and accommodating us if at all possible (and they usually do). Social Services are the best I've ever had at any VAMC (have experienced 6 others through the decades). The precautions being taken here against the present SARS-CoV-2 / Covid-19 pandemic are truly exemplary and my sense is that we're being adequately protected and are reasonably safe. Much kindness is to be found here, and kindness is power. We veterans in hospice at Ft. Meade Black Hills Health Care are fortunate to be receiving such superb care.nnThere's unfortunately a negative saying that many veterans have heard, stating that the VA is the second chance we get to give our life for our country. Not so, far from it. Serving us during the closing of our lives is an area where the VA truly shines. They've got our backs as we are helped to make our peace, conclude our affairs in good ways, and comfort us physically, mentally, and, if wanted and warranted, spiritually. Thank you Ft. Meade Veterans Administration Medical Center for being here for us... and a special shout-out to Mr. George Harr, Registered Nurse and HPC (Hospice and Palliative Care) Coordinator at Ft. Meade VAMC, who pulled me up and out of what would have been a terrible situation I was about to accept with a different long-term care facility in another state. Thank you, George. Am thankful for your efforts to see that we veterans are being served well.n.

I'm proud to call this VA Hospital my primary hospital. The staff at all levels and locations has always treated me perfectly. I would give 5 stars if it was not such an old building needing some repairs.
