Gone WAY downhill. The only thing that's gone up is prices. Selection of aquatic supplies is down drastically, they'll be happy to sell you fish, but keeping them alive and happy? Not so profitable I guess.

I’ve been shopping with Smithland Supply (formerly Dave’s Soda & Pet City) since I moved to Amherst in 2013. Currently a multi-pet home— our needs have always been met, often with a variety of choices for our critters. I frequent the Hadley location, and I can honestly say that I’ve never had a bad experience. The store is always clean and is easily navigable. Their inventory is superior and their prices competitive. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The recent renovations look great and improve the checkout experience.nOur Friday ritual consists of bringing our now 1 yr old Dalmatian for her weekly new toy and other supplies needed for our pack. Our Dal is a heavy chewer, loves shredding, and love particularly enjoys removing the squeaker from her toys! We’ve been on the lookout for a sturdy plush that can withstand the might of Moo’s jaws recently. While checking out today, we got to chatting with the young ladies cashiering. I did not get their names, but they were wonderful. One of them suggested a toy that she’d heard positive feedback about. She even went through the trouble of grabbing a couple styles of the toy from the sales floor and brought them over for us to take a look at. Moo decided on the “Tuffy Ring” and it’s been an absolute hit! The material is strong. She’s been at it for hours and had no luck puncturing the squeaker, despite her vigorous efforts to extract and silence it. 10/10 would buy again if she manages to destroy it.nWe also purchased a winter coat for our Dalmatian today. We’ve purchased several sweaters as well as a raincoat for her from Smithland over the last year and continue to be impressed by the selection of items offered. From a 12-week-old puppy to almost-full-grown, we’ve never had an issue finding something that fits her, or will even accommodate growth spurts.nSmithland Supply is my go-to for all of my pack’s needs. Friendly & knowledgeable staff. Competitive prices. Great selection to choose from for a variety of items.

After giving this place a few chances and having a negative experience each time, I decided it’s finally time for a review. Their pet department is the most concerning. When I first arrived I noticed a large amount of people waiting in their animal section, and nobody there to help. I had to ask the cashier to call someone. If this happened only once, I would understand, but this occurred EVERY time I went in. It was during that same trip that I noticed ICH on many of their fish that were for sale. I spoke to the girl in the department at the time (named Christie, perhaps) and she seemed completely unbothered by it, concerning as these fish were for regular sale. While I understand this isn’t a fish specialty store, there should still be some sort of assured quality to the fish. Having multiple sick fish on display is not a great look. I gave it a week before I went back, there were still some sick fish, but I was assured that the other tanks were in affected. This was proven to be wrong, as many of my fish died about a week and a half later. Unfortunately, their ill pet policy only extends for 5 days, so I ended up losing money. I had an established 10 gallon tank and the addition of their fish resulted in me losing some of my other fish. I went back soon after to talk to Christie? but was told she was out that day. Apparently this girl is the department manager, worrisome, as she seemed very unbothered by the sorry state of her department. I have quite a few friends who have had similar experiences here and with the same, unprofessional, department person. I was not planning on writing this review until I saw a local youtubers video (planetfishness) which mentioned the unethical sale and treatment of some betta fry. It goes to show that this department already has a bad rep in this area. As I said previously, the young girl in charge seems to not know what she’s doing, perhaps maybe put someone else in charge of the treatment of animals. Their Northampton location shut their animal department down months ago, and I hope Hadley is next, the quality of their fish are NOT worth the price. I would seriously avoid their fish and animals at all cost. It’s not worth the risk to your fish or even your wallet. I know western mass has a relatively low amount of pet stores, but I assure you there are much better than smithland supply.
