I called and made a reservation over a week in advance, for 8 people for 28 December. We arrived after a long day of driving, to find the restaurant closed and an answer machine message stating the restaurant was shut for the holidays.nWhilst I understand and completely support giving the hardworking staff time off over the holidays, I find it hard to reconcile your taking a telephone booking, with a return phone number, on an evening you are planning to be closed. At least you might have called me if the decision to be closed was made after I made my reservation.nIt’s kind of tough to find a table for 8 on a Saturday night at zero notice.nWe ate at Badlands on a journey through Gallup a couple of years back and found it excellent. We were very happy to be bringing friends this time.nnWe won’t make the same mistake again. Poor customer service.

Nice building, decent steak but the bread was just the worst ever. Couldn't even tear it apart.

The food was great and the waitress’s were friendly. I had 2 issues, one was after waiting 15-20 minutes for our entree we were told there was a mix up and our order was never placed. Then we waited an additional 5-10 minutes and told our order was put in, but was placed under the wrong table order. It appeared several tables had mixups, but it was Valentine’s Day and very busy. The manager also lost our Debit card at checkout, and then charged another guests total to my debit card. The card was never located nor was I called back to see if it was found. I was told the meal would be free, but have not seen the refund as of yet. Great food, poor management on the night I went.

I just enjoyed the most delicious steak the other night at Badlands. The marbling gave each bite a wonderful flavor and texture. I had only ordered the Badlands Sirloin, but the quality of the meat is what makes it fantastic. The garlic mashed potatoes are very good, though perhaps they could be benefited by depth beyond a good deal of garlic. The salad is, as expected, not what draws you to a restaurant like this, but of a good size. Though I wasn't able to stay for dessert at my last visit, the desserts I have had are a fine selection to finish off the meal. Creme brulee is a favorite of mine on the menu.nnWalking in after 7pm it was still bright enough outside that it took a moment for my eyes to adjust to the lighting as they keep it fairly dim in the restaurant. The furnishings aren't anything fancy, but there is an impressive fireplace toward the back that you'll want to watch the children by as they go to the restroom. The classic setting of old-time steakhouse is fairly well maintained throughout.nnI'd love to eat here regularly, but with that fantastic taste comes a fantastic cost. While many a steakhouse has prices to exceed those at Badlands Grill, the cost of admission for fine dining in Gallup is along the same lines and will likely exceed that of most restaurants in the area. This, of course, is fitting as it comes with a taste to match, so it will remain the place I go for very special occasions.
