I was employed by ash for a couple of years. 13 years of state service all together. I live with bipolar disorder. You'd think that would make me a more valuable asset. After alerting my shift supervisor that I needed time off due to feeling symptomatic, I was denied due to staffing. (There's never enough staff because working there is trash). I ended up being terminated ultimately after an incident that could've been prevented by management simply allowing me the time I needed. This place is proof that psych hospitals look at mental illness as dollar signs and not much more. I don't suggest taking loved ones to this facility.... as someone who lives with a serious mental illness I've seen first hand the way they think of us.

Update the Google Reviews at ASH very informativenPatients are allowed to order food takeout that gets delivered not everyone remembers their debit card numbersnI doubt the former employee staff member truly had memtal illness a psychiatric paper published from University North Carolina Chapel Hill contends admits that bipolar is simultaneously overly diagnosed & underdiagnosed within the same populationnThe underlying reason for this is extremely surprisingnA resource I use is the EnterprisenLets support eachothernam heading here to Austin State HospitalnASH is a refuge medication aint so bad for a tune up I have insightful conversations and truly enjoy the patients & staff there is plenty of outside time the first time i was brought here i was scared there is more interaction healthy positive interaction here at ASH than any other psych hospital i am not the one with the problem the average hominid is a dunderhead i look forward to support herenI am also going to tell ya negative reviews are not reliable the food is decent we have activties theought the day including music jeaopardy so much fun you can ask the doctor for double portions i like the key lime pie i am on disability SSI going back for support & to make friends normal people are to blame

I absolutely loved this place. I was admitted to the psychiatric ward when I was 15. You start at lvl 5 and can work your way up to lvl 1 to get more privileges and freedoms. My parents were highly abusive. This place actually listened to me and gave me the help and resources I needed as an abused teenager who had been through more than he could handle. My only complaint was the food. But what can you expect from a state funded hospital? HUGE thanks to Austin state hospital and all the wonderful staff there in 2011-2012. They even re-evaluated me and determined that I was not in need of mood altering medications. They took me off of all the medications Brentwood hospital in Shreveport Louisiana had me on. I'm now 23 years old and have at successful career and a family of my own. I feel that ASH is in part responsible for my success because they are the ones that made me realize that I wasn't crazy and my life with my parents was not normal. I have very fond memories of this place. I would recommend this hospital to anybody that needs it

They denied my 12 year old son treatment due to him being type 1 diabetic! I didn’t know a state ran facility could deny him due too his diabetes. I feel like they discriminated him the state of Texas should be ashamed!
