History The Instituto Italiano de Cultura de Montreal, is located on Dr. Penfield Avenue, in the heart of Golden Square Mile, the neighborhood of the 19th century Montreal bourgeoisie, between Stanley Street and Drummond Street. The Italian Institute of Culture of Montreal occupies the former stables of a prestigious late-century villa that now houses the Consulate General of Italy. The Institute organizes cultural activities, collaborates with local academic institutions, organizes Italian language and culture courses, presents art exhibitions, lectures, films and video projections; and gives information about the European Union, Italy, its regions and its cultural heritage. In addition, the Institute offers opportunities for cultural collaboration between organizations, Italians and Canadians to facilitate exchanges in theatrical, musical and cinematographic fields. The Institute offers information and logistical support for public and private operators, both Italian and foreign, interested in Italian cultural events in Canada. The Institute also supports initiatives based on the principles of democracy, mutual respect and international solidarity, which promote intercultural and multilateral dialogue. The IIC of Montreal has been a founding member of EUNIC Canada and the IIC is often involved in events organized by other cultural departments of European countries active in Quebec and in the rest of Canada. In the world, there are 89 Italian Institutes of Culture, supported mainly by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There are three in Canada: Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The Italian Institute of Culture of Montreal has under its jurisdiction the province of Quebec and the provinces of Eastern Canada and Ottawa. Detailed information on the activities organized by the Italian Institute of Culture in Montreal is available in English, French and Italian on the Institute's website. Information on previous activities can be accessed through the search portal. The building of the Institute belongs to the Italian Government. The current premises are of historical value and they also belong to the Italian government. The Institute is located near the McGill University campus on Doctor-Penfield Avenue, next to the Consulate General of Italy in the heart of Montreal's Golden Square Miles. The Institute was founded in 1962 by Antonio D'Andrea, professor of Italian, who had previously established the Department of Italian Language at McGill University and with Dante della Terza, he created the journal A Yearbook of Italian Studies. D'Andrea was convinced that the journal and the Institute's main objective was to create a cultural bridge between Italy and Canada and, in particular, between Italy and the French and English-speaking communities of Quebec, including the Italian one. -québécoise.
