VCA Laurelhurst Animal Hospital

VCA Laurelhurst is amazing. They helped us through all the details of a complicated international move with my cat, squeezing us in on a moments notice when the rules for importation changed. Dr. Abbott and the whole crew were so warm and friendly. They were always timely and professional. I recommend this clinic above others in town.

i showed up here in tears with my hyperventilating pup - too terrified to have remembered that all places require an appointment due to covid -- not to mention i am brand new to portland and had yet to establish a vet here.nni was met with nothing but kindness, compassion and informed care. dr. bartell, in particular, has been incredible - not only is her knowledge and experience apparent, she is a careful listener and her ongoing communication was exceptional. thank you, dr bartell!nnwhile i waited outside, visibly out of sorts, miguel at the front desk came out and offered me water?!nnthank you, vca laurelhurst. i will never forget your kindness. alfie is now your patient for life - whether you liked it or not!

TL;dr -- Care more about up-selling than caring for your pet.nnWe've used them for a few years, we really liked them the first year or two. But the last 2 visits have been down hill--each appointment is usually a hard sell on their in-house care plan. I am just really disappointed from this last visit cause they remembered to add in marketing pieces for Rxs, a prepaid container for HW test (forgot to give us the test container) and forgot to give us after visit notes. Which really just rubbed me the wrong way cause our dog turned 6 and we were concerned about joint health and the vet said she would follow up on that in a note. But the conversation went straight to upsells and $233 later... no notes on joint health suggestions.

If you have a pet you love don’t bother calling them. You literally can’t get an appointment for WEEKS. You have to go to an emergency vet if you need your pet seen within a reasonable time frame - people I’m talking like a few days. My cat had an abscess - well that pretty important wouldn’t you say? I was on hold for 10 MINUTES before the unfriendly receptionist could tell me they were booked for the next two weeks. My cat will be DEAD by then. Seriously?!?! Just hire more people or get longer hours. And don’t give me this Covid excuse: this has happened before - before March. Terrible.

This vet is definitely too busy. They are consistently booked at least 3 weeks out, but sometimes will see you same day for $30 more for a hospital charge. Ok, I get the convenience fee, but I wonder about the quality of care. These people are rushed, you can hear it in their voices, their manner. It’s difficult to care about pet owners when your schedule is packed tighter and tighter though I absolutely believe they care about animals. It seems to have become worse Over the last year or so. It’s been harder to get an appointment in a reasonable timeframe. This is speculation on what I’ve experienced, but these people seem stressed. The last time I called them, after being on hold for quite some time, it seemed like they wanted to get me off the phone. They are mostly polite and professional but I’ll be moving on to somewhere with my senior cats who sometimes need care within a few days, not several weeks. There has to be something between a routine checkup and an Dove Lewis ER visit.
