Slightly run- down but then every subway station in Nyc needs a coat of paint . You have to take a long escalator ride down to get on the trains as most stations up here in Washington Heights are deep. The GW bridge to New Jersey is here. And when you get out of the station at 181st street and Fort Washington you will see a restaurant called Hudson View .

As of this writing(December 5th, 2020) this train station is closed until next December because they are replacing the elevators that take you down to the platform.nnThe elevators here are notorious for randomly breaking down and causing delays. During rush hour you will often see a line of people down the stairs waiting to take the elevator because one or two of them are out of service. Therefore they are replacing the elevators. It may finish earlier than expected but it's definitely closed for the next 10 months.nnIf you need to take the downtown 1 train, you'll have to take the bus on Broadway down to 168th Street and take the 1 there. If you're going uptown, take the bus up to 191st and take it there.nnIf you don't wanna take the bus, you'll need to walk West on 181st past St Nicholas, past Broadway and up the hill to take the 181st A train, from there you can transfer to 1 at 168th or stay on if you're going express.

This station is closed for the next year b/c of elevator repairs. Google should update this.

Closest subway stop to Yeshiva University's Max Stern Center, which hosts the schools D3 basketball games. I haven't had an issue with the elevators. There are narrow stairways to the platform from the elevator-level platform. There are also stairs to climb once you leave the elevators and exit the turnstiles to get to the street. Many times I used to go to 191st street and exit the train from there as there are fewer total steps. They just started work on the elevators at 191st, so 181 requires fewer steps as of Feb 2020.
