The Stone Chapel Poulsbo Mortuary

Very thoughtful and they worked with us on a very personal level. My wife and I have made arrangements for ourselves there we were so impressed! Family owned and it shows!

Just attended a graveside service for a dear friend and we have never been so disturbed. The very moment their son ended the dedicatory prayer the funeral director lady stepped to the front and abruptly announced that they were going to lower the casket into the ground so if people wanted to return to their vehicles now was the time. Everyone stood still in shock and two filthy men in muddy rubber boots who had obviously dug the grave were summoned forward by the funeral director and right in front of the row of seated women with little children on their laps they began loudly kicking the plywood and carpet out from underneath the casket and ripping away all the green coverings. Then they lowered it into the ground using 2 old dirty straps. One of the little children called out fearfully, “but why?!”. She wasn’t upset at all until the loud kicking of the board’s. As soon as the casket was in the ground the funeral director lady and her helper, another young lady went over to the stunned grieving widower and briefly offered condolences and then jetted over to the hearse which was parked nearby and drove away. They were the first people to leave! The family was just standing around looking at the casket down in the hole. And the two grave diggers obviously waiting nearby to get on with their job. This poor family wandered away to their cars without the usual hugs, photos, without any time together around the casket to emotionally process what they had just experienced. This was hands-down the worst handling of a graveside service we have ever seen. So rude to rush the family and so awful for all those little grandchildren whose last memory of the day will be of those dirty men kicking the plywood. Shame on you Stone Chapel! Where is your compassion? Why didn’t you allow this sweet uninterrupted time and space to grieve in peace?

I recently had my mom's memorial service at the Stone Chapel. The staff is very caring and professional in handling all the details. I also really like the warm feel of the sanctuary where the service was held. My dad's service was held there 3 years ago and it was a lovely service as well. My parents had purchased a pre-paid funeral plan back in 1995 with the Lewis Mortuary/Stone Chapel. It was reassuring to know that their wishes were followed out in every detail. Highly recommend.
