A caring and compassionate funeral home!

DL Miller Funeral home handled the funeral of my daughter's father. He served in the navy and was given a military burial. My daughter (his eldest child is next-of-kin as he was unmarried). The flag is supposed to be presented to the next -of-kin. D.L. Miller funeral home was responsible for contacting the VA to set up the burial. They had been working with a sister of the deceased to set up the funeral. When they contacted the VA, they gave the sisters name as next-of-kin. Unfortunately, the sister decided to take advantage of that and told the cemetery director (with the D.L. Miller's support) that she was supposed to get the flag. She then sat next to my daughter at the burial, knowing that she was beyond grieving and expecting to get her father's flag and had the flag presented to herself. Afterwards, she refused to give the flag back to my daughter and a huge scene broke out because of it. Everyone was yelling at the sister to give the flag back to my daughter. A representative of D.L. Miller funeral home was present and did not step forward to try and correct anything. The military police stopped the sister from leaving and called the funeral home for guidance and D.L. Miller funeral home AGAIN gave the sister's name as next of kin and we watched in horror as she drove off with the flag. I will never forget my daughter's reaction that day, she was beyond consoling. Afterwards, the sister posted the flag on social media and also had a family member text a picture of the flag to my daughter to rub it in her face. (Yes a grown woman did this to a 17 year old girl who just lost her father before the start of her senior year.) Her dad's family was torn apart by this and have still not healed. My daughter had a DIFFICULT senior year and has still not fully recovered. I called the funeral home to try and understand how the sister was able to steal the flag. D.L. Miller funeral home told me they never even asked the sister for any documentation about her being next of kin. They said they never had issues like this before so didn't feel the need to verify any facts. In fact, the sister never even told them she was next of kin...they just assumed it (maybe because it was the easiest path rather than doing a little research or asking questions? I'm not sure.). They then passed this false information on to the VA. To this day, they will not take responsibility for what happened. They only blame the sister. D.L. Miller funeral home made a critical error that caused so much pain and I find it appalling that they won't even admit to any wrong doing.
