As the name implies, the station is MUCH closer to the town centre than Colchester North is. However, the station could honestly do with some upgrades to make it feel a bit more pleasant. More ticket machines, seating and possibly bringing back the second platform to allow for a more frequent train service here as well would be of much benefit. Trains here head towards the likes of Clacton, Colchester and London.
Infrequent services but perfectly placed for the shops and Colchester town centre. Use the main station if going to a football match or concert at the community stadium
The whole train station need an upgrade and an update. Often there's nobody there to assist or help, and even the machine (yes, one), is not working or able to provide tickets. Lack of information or possibilities to purchase Oyster card - I believe this should be included or at least one machine for Oyster cards should be available as many commute to/from London from this train station.
In regards to the town centre, there's the essential shops and boutiques, very small and the main centre is about two streets long. For someone who lived in larger cities and towns, this would be a slight shock and become boring very quick.
