Nowadays, you have a choice to make: stay in a newer hotel that's likely part of a chain, or stay in an independent place. Freeman's is the latter. Jim Freeman - the owner/operator - explained that his parents bought and ran it for many years before he bought it from them, I think in the late 80s he said.nnThe property is old, yes, and the furniture could stand to be updated, but really, if you're in the area to take advantage of the many outdoor-related things to do (the AT is close, water activities on Fontana Lake, etc), then it's the perfect place to stay. My buddy and I were motorcycling in the area and just needed a place to hang our hats for the night, and it was the perfect place.nnTo the person who complained about bugs. You're in the South! Bugs rule! I live in GA and have professional pest control service at my house and STILL I find bugs, and plenty of them,, and it's' NOT because the service doesn't do a good job. Mother Nature simply rules the roost. You have to accept that you'll find the occasional bug. Doors get left open, and bugs scoot in. It's not like our room was overrun by them. Sure, there was a daddy long-legs just chillin' in the corner of the shower stall, but so what? I just scooped him up and tossed him out the door.nnJim couldn't have been more polite, hospitable, and conversational.nnIf you want amenities like new furniture and a flat-screen TV? There are plenty of choices out there. But if you want a place that exudes old-school Americana, this is the place. I'd choose Freeman's again in a heartbeat over a vanilla, cookie-cutter chain hotel any day of the week.
Me and my husband went to the nanthal outdoor center, after we where looking for a place to stay on a whim came across this hidden gem! The owner was super friendly, and talkative! We loved the cottage and the atmosphere! Felt like home as soon as we arrived! Already planning our next trip! Also has a lake minutes away! Awesome stay!
Beautiful place loved it so much reminded my childhood. Visited with my wife and kid they loved it to. I will definitely re visit.
When I was deciding whether to call to book this hotel I saw the negative reviews but thought people were just difficult. I should have followed their advice.nFirstly, booking is difficult. Phone only. The website is ancient and vague.nWhen we got there, there were bugs everywhere in the check in area.nWe were escorted to the cabin where again there were bugs everywhere. We made a plan to buy lots of bug spray. Once inside it was the same - bugs everywhere. Plus some roaches. It smelled musty and moldy. I tried to clean the filter in the AC but it didn't help.nThe beds were terrible. Small and hard. Due to allergy to mold and the horrible beds we couldn't sleep.nWe decided to leave the next day instead of staying the three days we planned.nnThe host, who wouldn't give his name, would not refund our money. He gave a partial refund and stated there is a 2 night minimum. This was never mentioned until this point. It's not shown anywhere. I asked for a refund for the unused nights and he refused. He said I must take it up with my credit card company.nWhen I mentioned the mold and the rest of the reasons for leaving he said that he doesn't care.nnThen he said I must leave because HE is getting upset. He gets upset when he is the one keeping my money?nnIn short. Although convenient, it's just not worth it. Easily the worst place I have ever stayed in.
This is my family’s happy place! We come here 2 or 3 times a year. Heck we rode up one day just too see the lake and to visit with the owner Jim. Such a nice person and always brining fresh towels to the cabin and asking if we need anything. Can’t wait to go back this spring.
