I’ve stayed here twice. The owners and caretaker are awesome. Very responsive. This is the only place I’d stay in Maui. Such an old Hawaii dream!

Disappointed with our 1 night stay. While the place is very clean and well furnished, the lack of A/C is not something to take lightly. It’s extremely hot and humid, and the house retains heat even after it cools outside. We had 2 fans blasting in our room all night and barely slept.nnThe proximity to the highway is especially something to be aware of. Because there’s no A/C you will have your windows open all night which means you will hear the traffic speeding by all night. Large trucks travel the road to Hana at night when there’s less traffic and these will be especially loud.nnWe stayed in room 3, the only room in the house with its own bathroom. We picked this room mostly because it was described as being in the back and the quietest but it is actually in the front right of the house where a window (the only window) opens towards the east about 100 ft from the highway.nnIf you guys installed A/C units in each room this would turn my 2 star review into a 4 star! It would cool the house and block the highway noise.

The Ku'au Inn was a great stop before we took the road to Hana. The innkeeper was super friendly and accommodating. The breakfast options were extensive and of good quality. The bedroom was clean and relatively spacious. We particularly liked the outdoor shower and the machines available to do laundry. While the distance to Paia is walkable, the lack of sidewalks for the first quarter mile or so make this a little sketchy at night.nnWe were in Room 5, on the ground floor. We liked this room because of its proximity to the two bathrooms on the ground floor. However, it is also right next to the kitchen, so you may have some noise from those waking up at 3 am to see the sunrise. Room 5 does not have AC. However, despite the temperatures being in the high 80s and humid, with the windows open and the fan on, we stayed pretty cool throughout the night in our bedroom. AC is obviously nice, but the value to price ratio here makes it totally worth it if you are cost-conscious. All that said, we would definitely stay here again, and probably for several days based on the excellent location.

We stayed at the Kuau Inn in August of 2013 and enjoyed it immensely. We had one of the upstairs bedrooms and enjoyed the whole atmosphere of the place. It was nice to have a full kitchen at our disposal and fresh goodies provided for us in the fridge every day. The staff were not intrusive and we almost had the house to ourselves for the full three days. The geckos and insects are nothing if not entertaining during a nice relaxing visit outside. And my wife will forever miss the available outdoor showers which made the stay that much better. We will hopefully be back someday to enjoy the place all over again.
