Bald Butte Lookout

‘Bee warned’ there is a bee and fly infestation in and around this structure. My husband spent about 30 minutes trying to rid the place of them, but they just kept coming back in. When we arrived, the floor was covered in dead flies as well. I’ve stayed a fire lookouts before, so I know there is always a level of roughing it, but this was too much. We didn’t end up staying the night.

Back in the late 60's I spent many days/nights on Bald Butte looking for fires started by lightning. From reading the reviews it hasn't changed much

Great place for a stay. 4wd is recommended.

It's not bad but really windy at times, you can rent the look out but only enough room for 2 people, and the fly's are unbearable. But overall on a clear day you can see mt. Shasta. And Crater lake.

This is my seventh lookout visit in Oregon. Bald Butte's best assets are its remoteness and its view. If you want to be alone, here's your ticket. We arrived on a windy stormy day and were thrilled to find the lookout was clean and comfy. We reheated chili and baked biscuits in the little oven while we watched an incredible storm show off around us. Luxury! Thank you FS folks for rehabbing this gem.
