Traxler's Hunting Preserve

Great place for my Dad, Brother and myself to spend a afternoon hunting together. Cant wait for the restaurant to open back up. Their hunting dogs are great too!

Great place, first class service, guides and owner treated us great and lot of fun to talk to. Our group shot 73 birds and had a blast. Food is great too.

We've been coming to Traxler's Hunting Preserve for many years and up until our visit this fall have always been very impressed.nnWe had a group of 4 hunters plus one person to work our two dogs. We ordered 20 birds and we were placed in a very large field (larger than previous years). After we entered the field we saw a very young man on an ATV finishing up placing the birds. It appeared that he placed the birds at the edge of cuts, and didn't walk into the middle of a section to place the birds. The man drove up to us and told us that there was water placed for the dogs at the end of the field (pool and a dish). Our first disappointment came 45 minutes later after we walked the first section and didn't find any water for the dogs and the dogs were panting hard and needed refreshing. We had no choice but to work our way back to our vehicles, thank goodness we brought water with us for the dogs.nnWe spent 3 hours trying to find the 20 birds we ordered. We bagged 8, the dogs flushed 2 out of range and 1 was clipped and ran. That leaves 9 birds unaccounted for. We think that the birds were not dizzied before they were placed and ran. Normally, we get all of the birds we ordered or miss one or two. Very disappointing hunt. We were told by the young man that there was water at the end of the field for the dogs (there wasn't, this means he assumed that there was water but he wasn't the one who placed it there and he failed to verify the availability of water before he told us that it was there, this also leads us to believe he wasn't responsible about placing the birds either). It appears our day was spoiled by one incompetent young man who is trusted with too much responsibility.nnWe had lunch in the lodge and that was fine. I was happy that the Lodge is enforcing the use of masks and taking social distancing rules seriously.nnOur dogs were over stressed due to the lack of water at the end of the fields, they had to wait too long to be refreshed. Stressing out the dogs is discouraging and hopefully they will not associate pheasant hunting with deprivation and suffering. We will probably try another preserve next year in hopes of having a better time.
