Ok so I saw a no AC room for $49.99 online. I jumped on a reservation. Well it was a typo. It took a while but after seeing my confirmation email the manager honored the price. She wasn't happy about it, but I don't think she was angry with me. It was awkward to have upset her but we were 4 hours from home. The rooms do need some cosmetic care but were clean. I don't mind a lil peeling wallpaper if the room isn't dirty. There was loud construction all day but we came to hike and be outside not sit in a hotel. Just beware if you are booking in 2020. The pool, sauna and hot tub were not set up and that was not listed on the website as unavailable. Also, over half of the breakfast items were sold out and there were no togo options for juice or coffee. Had I have had to pay full price for our 2 night stay I would have been miffed that the amenities were not listed as not ready yet or sold out. But since things shut down early in town (Damn Rona.) this place had other great options--fire pit with plenty of wood, horseshoes, cornhole, grills and picnic tables. That was really nice since this is a budget motel. The cool nights made air unnecessary. It is a trek to some places but most are within walking distance. We will stay here again. But only after things calm down with Rona. No masks required and staff don't wear them--even when handling food. Since 99% of the shops and restaurants required properly worn masks and hand sani to enter, I would have preferred they followed suit. Staff was friendly--I am sure the manager usually is but I only saw her at check-in.

Is this place retro, yes. It it fancy no. I read the comments before booking our room and I have to tell you, some people are just too all about me for their own good. Our room was CLEAN and very well maintained for the age of the place. I loved the striped wallpaper and the box tv. It had a charm all its own. We are not bed and breakfast or resort kind of people and this place was right up our alley. They messed up our reservations when we got there and we had our email confirming our stay and it was fixed right away. We loved it and would do it again. We even got to enjoy a family of foxes on the property. It added to the charm of our stay.

We booked our room very last minute on a holiday weekend and read all the reviews. We arrived after 15 hours on the road expecting the worst based on what we had read and were more than pleasantly surprised. The room was clean and quiet, the bed linens were clean and smelled good, the bathroom was older but spotless, the TV isnt a huge flat screen but it gets the job done and breakfast oh my.....the fresh made local donuts were WONDERFUL! We have stayed on the gunflint trail several times and have paid twice as much per night and the breakfast wasn't as lovely and the room wasn't as clean. We will be back in a month and we will be staying here again. They even have fire pits and horseshoes for a lovely evening after exploring the North Woods and a pool and sauna if that's more your style.

Clean, safe, basic. There are more expensive options in town if you are looking for quality. I expected much worse based on some of these reviews and was pleased to find a clean, functioning room where I spent a safe and relaxing night. The staff seemed decent also. I frequently stay at the cheapest place in town, and I started reading reviews after staying in some truly horrible rooms, but this place was totally acceptable for a lowest priced option. I would stay there again.
