Hertz

The rental "location" consists of two parking places inside of the LaFonda Hotel valet parking garage, a rental office (that is apparently only sporadically open, based on a comment from the hotel valet who had to open the gate to let me in for a return), and an "Express drop off box" outside the Hertz office. When I arrived to return my car shortly after 1pm on the day my rental was due (a Friday), I found the office closed and dark (despite the fact that the business hours posted on the door said they're open Mon-Fri 8 am to 5 pm). After parking the vehicle, I waited outside the office for about 15 minutes, at which time the valet said something to the effect of "Who knows when they'll be back, you can just leave the keys in the express drop box and be on your way because it could be a long wait." So I did that. Three days later, I started getting voicemails on my cell phone telling me that the car was overdue and I had been charged additional days rentals plus late fees for each overdue day and they would be starting legal action to recover the vehicle. When I called the 1-800 number, I was told that the contract was still open and only the drop-off location could close it out; and until the contract was closed, the fees would continue to accrue -- was I *sure* I had dropped of the car?? (Yes!) Then I called the phone number listed for the La Fonda site and the person who answered said that the corporate customer service was wrong, the contract was closed, but he "just hadn't had time to generate my receipt" (despite the fact that I was speaking to him at 1 pm on the following Tuesday). He was not apologetic, and in fact, sounded very annoyed that I was bothering him. He asked if I wanted an email copy of the receipt after he generated it and I said yes, so he asked for my email, which I gave, and then he said, "Okay, have a good day" and hung up. Use this location as a drop off point at your own risk.
