Went to try and get a business lic to start my own business here in Chesapeake and no one knows anything keep getting different information they have it so confusing it's almost impossible to start a small business in Chesapeake just UNBELIEVABLE why they make it so difficult. Me and 3 other people there said same thing someone needs to do something Chesapeake loosing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Do not bother trying to start a business

Between not being able to do much of anything over the phone and when you do call the line being busy or it not being picked up those are some serious issues. When somebody calls have a voicemail or don't have your line busy I have called 8 times in one day to a busy line.

I just moved to Chesapeake from NY on June 2, 2020, knowing nothing about the online system. Couldn’t register until I get a bill number. So last Friday the bill finally came with “original due date” of 9/30. I never got this bill and now I’m charged a late fee and interest totaling around $90. When I request it to be credited since I never got the original bill, the treasurer office responded with “Unfortunately, failure to receive a bill is not grounds for a waiver of penalty and interest on a tax bill as penalty and interest are added per the VA state code the date after a due date. Our office mails all bills several weeks prior to the due date to the mailing address provided however we cannot guarantee delivery by the postal service...” What a classy way to welcome a new resident.

I recently returned home from a long journey abroad with nine companions to realize I had misplaced my real estate bill. I wrote to the Treasurer's office and was emailed one promptly. What excellence!

When contacting the treasurer office the phone just rings with no voicemail. I contacted another department who transferred me to them and the phone rang, someone picked up the phone and hung straight up without finding out the reason I was calling. I understand we are in a pandemic, I understand some places of business may be undermanned....however, doing your job and providing customer service should be priority. We all are dealing with the new normal the Covid-19 has caused. You are charging late fees and not available to help prevent that.
