Johnny Sack's Cabin

Came for the wildlife, but there were so many riding 4 wheelers with loud mufflers that there wasn't any to see.nThe mosquitos were so thick, you were breathing them in and even being quick about a dozen came in the car when we opened the doornThe area is beautiful, but I was too busy with the mosquitos in my face (even with bug spray) to pay much attention.nThe best part was the fish which are huge.nNo fishing is allowed in this part of the stream, but they have a fish food dispenser that you can use with quarters.

In 1929, Johnny Sack leased a small tract of land from the United States Forest Service and began building his log cabin at Big Springs. Little did Johnny know when he first acquired the choice building site, his home would become a landmark one day discussed in the United States Congress.nnDue to its unique location and picturesque setting, Johnny’s cabin and nearby water-wheel have long been one of the most photographed sites in Island Park. The cabin attracts thousands of visitors each summer interested in the log and stone structure as well as the building’s colorful creator.

Beautiful nature walk with great campsites and picnic areas. The spring is clear and crisp, its very peaceful and serene.5

This is a great little spot to visit. Hopefully you'll be there between 10 am and 4 pm during its summer-only open season that ends around September 15. The Springs themselves are interesting but the most interesting thing for me was Johnny Sack's Cabin. Hand-crafted with a unique bark-veneer technique used on various pieces of furniture and interior trim pieces. Whimsical, fairy-tale-esque, complete with a clay sewer-pipe flue for the old wood-burning stove.
